Elias clearly repeats the entire story, detailing their secret friendship and the murder plot. When Mr. Sterling again demands the records, Celeste slips and admits, “I did this for us… she was always in the way.”
Mr. Sterling is horrified. Dr. Evans tries to tamper with the IV bags, but Mr. Sterling shoves him away. The guards return, and Mr. Sterling orders them to arrest Celeste and Dr. Evans. Celeste flees, but Dr. Evans is detained.
Facing his daughter, Mr. Sterling turns to Elias: “What do I do? How do I save her?”
“You have to turn off the machines, sir,” Elias insists. “They are pumping poison. Her body can’t heal until they stop.”
It is the most terrifying choice of Mr. Sterling’s life: turn off life support based on a street kid’s word, or leave his daughter connected to what might be killing her. Trusting his gut, and the fierce loyalty of Elias, Mr. Sterling shuts off all the machines.
Dr. Evans, still groaning on the floor, laughs bitterly, claiming Mr. Sterling has just killed his daughter.
