Lila, the daughter of millionaire Mr. Sterling, is sick with aplastic anemia and confined to her beautiful, yet lonely, bedroom. Her father reads to her, but her mother, Celeste, and Dr. Evans insist she must remain completely still. Unbeknownst to them, the street orphan Elias is outside the mansion. Having accidentally kicked his cherished old ball over the high wall, he climbs a tall tree to retrieve it.
