All that time he was not unsure.
He had already chosen someone else.
Brianna’s voice trembled beside me. “You told me your marriage ended because she did not want children.”
I closed my eyes for a second and then looked at her again, really seeing her this time. She looked young and overwhelmed and completely blindsided instead of smug or proud.
Ryan stepped forward and lowered his voice. “Both of you need to calm down so we can talk somewhere private.”
I stepped back immediately. “Do not try to position yourself as the one in control right now.”
Brianna looked at him with tears in her eyes. “Were you ever planning to tell me the truth.”
He said nothing, and the silence answered her question.
She reached into her purse, took out a ring, and dropped it into his hand. “You used me,” she whispered.
I expected to feel some sense of victory, but instead I felt empty in a way that surprised me.
Ryan looked at me like he still expected me to fix this for him, like I had done so many times before during our eight years together. This time I did not move to help him.
