The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly as people began looking at Aaron differently. Guests who had ignored him earlier were now studying him closely, trying to piece together what they had missed.

My father stared at Aaron, then at me, and said, “That cannot be true.” Aaron replied calmly, “It is close enough.”

My mother spoke without thinking, her voice uncertain. “Why did you not tell us any of this?”

Aaron gave a small smile, though it carried no humor. “Because she invited me here as her partner, not as a financial statement.”

That sentence landed heavily, leaving no room for argument. Natalie turned toward me slowly and asked, “Did you know about this?”

“Not at the beginning,” I said honestly. “I knew he came from a farming background and worked incredibly hard, and the rest came later without changing how I felt.”

That was completely true, because when I met Aaron two years earlier at a local education fundraiser, he simply said he managed operations on his family farm. He never mentioned wealth or success, and I only learned about it months later through someone else.
