After high school, she earned a spot at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. But the tuition and expenses weighed heavily on her family. Everything changed when actor Robin Williams, a Juilliard alumnus, gifted her a scholarship covering her full costs — even her apartment and plane tickets home.
Though she never met him, she always wrote him letters of gratitude.
Breaking into Hollywood
After graduation, she appeared in stage plays and TV roles. Her film debut came at 31 in Jolene, but 2011 was her breakout year. She starred in multiple films, including Take Shelter, The Tree of Life, and The Help. Her roles in The Help and Zero Dark Thirty earned her Academy Award nominations.
That red-carpet moment with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn became her Hollywood turning point. The Help grossed $216 million and brought her worldwide attention.
But it was Interstellar (2014) that cemented her place in global cinema, making over $701 million. She played the emotionally complex daughter of Matthew McConaughey’s character — a role originally written for a man, before director Christopher Nolan rewrote it to focus on a father-daughter story.
