Years passed. Corin grew into a determined young man with remarkable academic achievements. Celia blossomed into an expressive girl who loved drawing and music. The day Corin received a scholarship letter from a prestigious university Alastair hosted a small celebration. Celia cried quietly when she learned Corin would leave for school.
“You will come back, right,” she asked in a trembling voice.
Corin smiled tenderly. “Of course I will. You are my friend. That does not change.”
Alastair placed a hand on Corin’s shoulder. “Our home is always open to you.”
Later that night Corin paused at the doorway of the estate with his bag at his side. He glanced back at the two people whose lives he had changed without ever intending to. As he stepped into the car that would take him toward his future the truth settled in his heart. One ordinary moment beside a greenhouse had reshaped all their lives.
Celia never lost her voice again.
