Speaking at the British-American Business Council’s 65th Annual Christmas Luncheon in Santa Monica, the 41-year-old Duke of Sussex compared growing up royal to one of Britain’s most beloved period dramas.

“People ask if life in the royal family was like Downton Abbey,” Harry said. “Yeah — but only ONE of those is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners, and marriages to Americans… and the other is a TV show.”

Ouch.

During what he called his first Christmas party in ages, Harry took the stage with a mix of humor and heart, sharing what it feels like to be a British expat in America.

“For me, being British isn’t about where you physically stand, but what you stand for.”

He also joked about experiencing American traditions for the first time — specifically, the Fourth of July.

“It’s a new world for me… celebrating independence from Britain, and more specifically, independence from my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather.”
