Gabriela Cruz sat on the narrow bench in the Denver County Jail visiting room, her hands trembling despite her effort to stay still. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a pale sheen over the steel table between her and the woman seated across from her. Attorney Fiona Adler adjusted her glasses and closed the thick legal folder resting on her lap, her expression composed yet compassionate.

Gabriela’s voice was rough from sleepless nights and swallowed sobs. “She is making my little girl lie. I saw it in court. Cassandra whispered in her ear and Daisy froze like a frightened animal. My daughter wanted to speak but she was terrified.”

Fiona inhaled slowly, choosing her words with care. “If we can prove coercion, we can reopen everything. But without proof it is nearly impossible. A five year old child under the control of a wealthy guardian is considered vulnerable. Judges do not trust such testimony without evidence to support it.”

Gabriela lowered her gaze. “So I just wait in here while they paint me as a monster.”
