That night, Jason barely slept. He heard water running. A lock clicking. A muffled groan.

The next morning, when Ashley entered Margaret’s room to bathe her, Jason pretended to answer a phone call and stepped away. Instead of leaving, he quietly stood near the hallway corner. He opened his phone camera and pointed it toward the bedroom door.

Ashley locked the door. Minutes later Jason heard her whisper.

“Stay still. Do not make this hard for me.”

Then came the sound of something dragging. Then his mother’s pained noise.

Jason’s hands shook as he zoomed toward the door gap. Ashley had forgotten to fully latch it. The door opened slightly.

What he saw froze his blood.

Ashley had set her phone on a chair. The screen glowed. A video call was active. From the phone came a man’s voice laughing.

“Show me the old lady’s face clearly.”

Jason felt ice run down his spine. This was not caregiving. He stepped back, heart racing, and dialed 911.

Police arrived quickly after Jason reported suspected abuse and illegal recording of a vulnerable adult. Jason stood outside the bedroom, voice trembling.

“Please check now. I saw her video calling someone while bathing my mother.”
