“Ethan and Caleb,” they answered in perfect unison, as if rehearsed.
“And your mom?” Ryan asked, his chest tight.
The boys exchanged a quick look.
“Elena.”
The world tilted.
Ryan didn’t remember leaving Lauren standing beside the car, furious and confused. He only knew he was walking behind the boys—through narrow streets, past a dusty playground with broken swings, until they stopped at a small, weathered house that smelled of cheap medicine and damp wood.
Inside, lying on a thin mattress, Elena opened her eyes.

She recognized him instantly.
Tears slid down her face, weak and soundless. “I tried to tell you,” she whispered. “But… she found me first.”
Ryan didn’t need to ask who she was.
At the hospital later that night, while Ethan and Caleb clutched his hands, Elena spoke in fragments between coughing fits. When Lauren discovered the pregnancy years ago, she came to Elena with a smile sharp as glass. She said Ryan would never believe her. That she’d destroy Elena’s reputation. That the boys would grow up branded with shame.
Terrified, Elena ran.
She lost her job. Then her health. She survived however she could, hiding the truth to protect her sons.
