Evelyn—Sebastian’s mother—walked slowly down the aisle with her cane. He had placed her in an upscale nursing home “for her comfort.”

“No one calls my grandchildren criminals,” she said calmly.

Sebastian went pale. “Mother?”

She ignored him and embraced the twins as they cried “Grandma!” No DNA test was needed.

“I will testify,” Evelyn said firmly. “Maria visited me every Sunday when my son was too busy. She cared for me. She brought me these boys. She worked in that house not to steal—but because she is ill. She wanted to know if the father of her children was a man she could trust before she left them behind.”

The room fell silent.

“You’re sick?” Sebastian asked, horror dawning.

Maria lowered her eyes. “I needed to be sure they’d be safe. But the man I loved disappeared.”

The prosecutor interjected. “That has nothing to do with the missing necklace. Victoria’s sapphire necklace vanished. Maria was alone in the room.”

“That necklace,” Evelyn interrupted, “is mine. And if you want to find it, ask the child.”

All eyes turned to Leo.

“The lady put it in Mom’s bag,” he said simply. “But stealing is wrong. So I put it back in her purse.”

The judge ordered the bag searched.
