Emily stepped forward.
“You’re going to hurt them,” she said firmly.
Vanessa spun around. “Who do you think you are? Get out!”
Ignoring the insults, Emily gently lifted one baby, then skillfully gathered the other two in her arms. She hummed an old lullaby her mother used to sing.
Within minutes, the nursery fell silent.
The triplets slept peacefully against her.
Vanessa’s eyes shifted — calculating.
“Well,” she smirked, “you clearly have a talent. The night nurses keep quitting. I need someone to handle them overnight. I’ll pay you double. But you don’t say a word to Daniel. He believes I care for them personally.”
Emily hesitated.
Something about Vanessa felt wrong.
But she thought of her mother. The medical bills. And the three helpless babies.
“I’ll do it,” she said.
The Dark Discovery
The job quickly became a bittersweet routine. Emily arrived at night and left at dawn. Daniel, still grieving the loss of his wife, had become distant — trusting Vanessa completely.
But Emily began noticing troubling details.
Vanessa insisted on preparing the bottles before leaving for parties, giving strict orders not to replace them.
After drinking the milk, the babies fell into unnaturally deep sleep.
