“She called it a game,” Ethan explained, voice breaking. “She said her mother’s boyfriend, a man named Justin, has been touching her inappropriately for about three months. And her mother knew. Lily said she mentioned it to her mom today and her mom got angry… called her a liar.”
The officers exchanged grim looks.
“Mr. Carter, we’ll need to take Lily to the hospital for a forensic exam. We’re also arresting the suspect tonight.”
“Do whatever you need. Just protect her.”
At the hospital, Lily was examined by a pediatric forensic specialist, Dr. Elena Ramirez, who specialized in child sexual abuse cases. The exam confirmed the worst. There was physical evidence of repeated, recent sexual abuse.
“Mr. Carter,” the doctor said privately, face grave, “your daughter has been sexually abused on an ongoing basis. There is physical trauma consistent with penetration.”
Ethan felt his legs give out. He sank into a chair, head in his hands.
“My baby… my little girl.”
“I’m so sorry, but you did the right thing calling immediately. We’re documenting everything—this will help the criminal case.”
