I walked calmly toward my assigned row among the graduates. High above the field the VIP section glittered with shaded seats reserved for wealthy donors.
My family stood there even though they had no legitimate access. My father Patrick filmed Courtney while she practiced smiling toward his camera.
My mother adjusted Courtney’s hair like a stylist preparing a celebrity. None of them noticed the dean stepping toward the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” announced Dean Malcolm Rowe, “today marks a historic moment for our university.”
The crowd gradually quieted. Phones lifted into the air.
“We often speak about potential,” he continued, “but rarely do we witness potential transforming into extraordinary achievement during the same moment.”
Students shifted in their seats. Parents leaned forward curiously.
“It is my privilege to introduce our valedictorian,” he said clearly.
A ripple moved across the stadium. Applause began softly.
“But she is more than a student,” he added. “As of this afternoon she will become the youngest self made female billionaire in American history following the acquisition of her artificial intelligence infrastructure company.”
