Brandon stepped back without a sound, then re-entered more loudly, letting the door click shut.
Lila startled and quickly stood.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter… they were fussy, I was just trying to calm them.”
Brandon nodded calmly.
“Thank you. For taking care of them.”
That evening, his wife Vanessa returned.
She walked in with shopping bags from upscale boutiques, flawless as always—but distant. She didn’t greet the girls. Her attention stayed on her phone.
Later, Brandon noticed a name on her screen: “Lucas.”
That night, he finally asked.
Vanessa didn’t hesitate. She admitted everything—she had fallen for someone else and planned to move to New York. The girls could stay with him, she said. After all, there was already someone to take care of them.
Just like that, Brandon was left with two babies and a fractured life.
Then came the next blow.
A lawyer informed him that large amounts of money had been transferred out of his company accounts—sent somewhere unknown. The business he had built from nothing began collapsing almost overnight.
One evening, he sat at the table, surrounded by unpaid bills and financial reports, unsure where to begin.
