The hostess led me to a table by the window. I ordered everything expensive on the menu—the aged steak, the rare caviar, the champagne. I was halfway through my Lobster when they burst through the door.
Derek looked like he was about to have an aneurysm. But it was Tara who charged toward me first.
"You BITCH! How dare you drive HIS car! That's my brother's baby!"
I took another bite of the Lobster. "Mmm. This is divine. You should try it—oh wait, you can't. I spent all your dinner money."
Derek grabbed a chair from a nearby table, dragging it across the floor.
"Do you have any idea what you've done? That account was for emergencies."
"This is an emergency," I replied. "My emergency exit from this sham of a marriage."
Tara's face had turned an alarming shade of red. "He promised we would ride in that car together for the first time! It was supposed to be OUR special moment!"
I took another bite of steak, chewing slowly before answering. "Well, I beat you to it."
"You've ruined everything!" Tara continued. "He's broke now because of you! He can't even buy me my favorite dessert for my birthday next week!"
