Just then, Ludwig's phone rang. The caller ID read, [The Dumbest Person in the World.] It seemed like disdain, but it was actually full of affection.
It turned out to be Whitney. She said something to him and his rarely expressionless face instantly showed panic.
He spoke to me almost in a notification tone, "My junior colleague is being harassed by a patient. She's just a young girl and can't handle this. I have to go see her."
I grabbed his hand, "Is she the only one in the hospital? She could ask someone else for help, or call the police. Why does she have to go to someone else's husband?"
"You forgot? Today is my prenatal checkup. You promised to come with me."
Ludwig looked at me as if he were seeing me for the first time, like a stranger, "Suzy, how can you say such heartless things? Whitney is my junior colleague; I have an obligation to take care of her."
With that, he shook off my hand and walked out.
Watching his turning back, I suddenly remembered the day I found out I was pregnant. He was so excited back then, he was even crying. He said that the child and I were his life, but now he couldn't choose us over another woman.
